Darvocet - MKEgal - 07-01-2009

This was a step-down drug for me, following a crash which included broken & severely bruised bones. After several weeks on stronger medicine, my doctor gave me this to both control the pain and allow me to be more clear-headed. It worked on both accounts. The only side effect I noticed was some constipation, which was rectified by drinking more water & eating more fiber.

Percocet - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

When my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he was suffering from horrible pains. The doctor first prescribed over the counter medication such as Tylenol and Advil, but as his pain grew, he threw in Percocet. My dad was instructed to take it as soon as he felt the pain coming on, but as most men try to be stoic, my dad would wait until it got unbearable before taking the pill, and then it took about 15 minutes to work. If my dad would keep ahead of the pain, the Percocet did a good job of controlling the breakthrough pain that he experienced. Later on, my dad's doctor prescribed Oxycontin, which in conjunction with Percocet, did a decent job of controlling pain most of the time without any severe side effects other than pretty constant constipation. Sadly, my dad succumbed to his disease after just three months. But Percocet did a satisfactory job of keeping most of the pain at bay, as long as it was taken at the very onset of the pain.

Advair Diskus - MKEgal - 07-01-2009

Although I sometimes only use it once a day, Advair has mostly controlled my symptoms. In the past year, I've used a rescue inhaler 3 or 4 times. I've not had any side effects that I know of. It is simple to use & convenient to transport (keeps the mouthpiece clean).

Oxycontin - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

When my dad was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, he had horrible pains that affected his stomach, his back, his side and his shoulders. He was originally told to take Tylenol and Advil, but as the cancer progressed, so did the pain. They then prescribed Percocet and finally, Oxycontin, except he was told to take his 40MG tablets every eight hours. For the most part, the Oxycontin did an adequate job of controlling the pain if you took it on schedule and if you immediately popped a Percocet if you felt there was breakthrough pain coming. But there were some days that even the Oxycontin would not stop the excruciating stabbing pain he was feeling. At one point, hospice told us to crush the pills ... something you should never due. Sadly, my dad passed away, but despite its imperfections, it was probably the only pain pill that provided some relief during his final days. Constipation was a big side effect, but that was about it.

Lodine - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

My 92 year old mother was prescribed Lodine for arthritis pain, after trying a myriad of other drugs. The doctors were concerned about stomach irritation and other side-effects, though they said this was a mild anti-arthritic. Although it helped some, her knees are so bad that nothing really works to give her pain relief. Recently my mother's blood work indicated that her kidney function test was out of range, so the doctor pulled her off the Lodine. She is now just taking Tylenol 3, which has not done much to help the pain and has increased her constipation. We need to see if her kidneys bounce back, otherwise we'll have to see a kidney specialist. So just a warning about extended use of Lodine.

Levothroid - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

I went to the doctor about five years ago for my annual check up, and during a blood test, she found out that I had a thyroid deficiency (hypothyroidism) and immediately put me on this medication. I had not realized that some of the symptoms I had been experiencing (always cold, tired, weight gain) were indicative of hypothyroidism. She tweaked the dosage once or twice, but so far, this dosage seems to work for me and keeps my TSH in check. No side effects and I finally remember to take it each morning. Luckily it is inexpensive and is an easy medication to use. I just have to remember not to eat or drink anything for an hour.

Ditropan - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

My mother suffers from mild incontinence, which embarrasses her. She wears pads and an extra protective layer of disposable underpants, but is afraid of an accident at night when she's sleeping. She also didn't like that she was waking up three or four times a night to go to the bathroom. So the doctor gave her Ditropan to try. She has been using it for about three years (as needed) and it does a good job most of the time in cutting down the number of times she has to get up to use the bathroom. The only side effect she has is dry mouth, but she also takes other medications which might be contributing to this condition. It does work for her -- it doesn't totally stop her nighttime visits to the rest room, but it has cut them down.

Lasix - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

My mother had been experiencing swelling of her legs. After doing tests, the doctor determined it was not congestive heart failure, but just "old age" and poor circulation. So he prescribed Lasix every morning. The swelling did go down, but not as much as he would have liked, so instead of upping the dosage, he added Zaroxolyn every other day. She continues to take Lasix on a regular basis and it does a decent job of keeping most of the swelling away, but the Zaroxolyn is also needed, as we determined when a new doctor suggested she stop using it. At age 92, the new doctor is also afraid to up the Lasix dosage, so we are keeping everything status quo, since it seems to work. The only side effect is having to go to the bathroom a lot!

Wellbutrin - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

My 92 year old mother has been suffering from depression for many years and has been put on a number of different anti-depressants. Some worked, some didn't. Currently her main anti-depressant is Lexapro, but because she was still in a foul mood much of the time, the doctor added Bupropion in the evening. I can't say that it is a miracle drug, but it has helped stabilize her mood a little. She has her good days and bad days, but I think it has the requisite effect. I guess when you are 92, you have permission to be depressed, since it seems all of your friends are dying and you have a bunch of medical problems. There were no side effects as I can determine.

Zaroxolyn - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

My mother is 92 years old and had been experiencing swelling in her ankles. Tests showed she did NOT have congestive heart failure, but it was a combination of "old age" and poor circulation. The doctor put her on Lasix, which helped, but he then added Zaroxolyn, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (three times a week). Together, it did the trick. Recently my mom got a new doctor and he suggested she cut out the Zaroxolyn, which she tried. Within two weeks her feet were swollen again, so she is back on the pill three times a week, and the swelling went down. We are very happy that this pill works!

Flexeril - SuzyQ - 07-01-2009

I had somehow wrenched my back and was having a lot of difficulty sleeping because my back was bothering me. I also had some problems during the day with flexing my muscles. The doctor recommended some exercises but also supplemented it with Flexeril. I have to say that it really helped me get to sleep and stay asleep and it was much easier to get out of bed in the morning. It also helped during the day. After a couple of weeks my back was good as new. It was a very easy medication to take with good results.

Prozac - Polly - 07-01-2009

My experience with this drug is mixed. I started taking Fluoxetine, the generic for Prozac, at age 25, when I started seriously looking at medication to control my depression. For the first five months, the change in my emotional health was amazing! I was dumbstruck, thinking "Wow, this is what 'normal' feels like!" I felt happy for the first time in my life. But during the sixth month of being on Fluoxetine, it suddenly stopped working. It was like emotionally slamming into a brick wall. I fell into a suicidal depression that had no observable triggers or stressors. Once I stopped taking this medication, I returned to feeling depressed, but not suicidal. I have since switched to other drugs with more success.

Lunesta - James - 07-01-2009

I love Lunesta! My doctor prescribed it to me after he diagnosed me with sleep apnea and it has worked like a charm. This is the first sleep aid I have used and it's great. The only thing I have to complain about is the metallic taste it leaves after swallowing, but that can be solved by eating something with it.

Vicodin - eastssideboy - 07-01-2009

This drug has really worked well for me so far. After having surgery to repair a completly torn ACL and a torn MCL, my doctor prescribed me Vicodin. I had actually heard of it before after watching "House" on Fox and House becomes addicted to Vicodin after a surgery to repair his leg. But so far, addiction has not been a problem for me and Vicodin has not shown any side effects on me.

Percocet 10/650 - Becky - 07-01-2009

I just had an emergency c-section and after I was removed from my IV, I was given this to help with the pain. Initially this was wonderful as the pain was relieved and I was mostly able to function. I found that this made me tired in addition to relieving the pain. I weened myself off of this as soon as possible because I am not one who likes the drowsy pain relief sensation.

Motrin - Becky - 07-01-2009

I just had an emergency c-section performed for the birth of my first child. While I was in the hospital, I was on some heavy pain pills, but after my recovery started to progress and I could go home, I was given this perscription and I found that the pain around my scar was lessened, but I did not feel 'drugged up'. I prefer to take this over heavy pain pills that knock me out so I don't feel the pain. Instead, I am alert and without pain.

Advair Diskus - Lee - 07-01-2009

Have been diagnosed several times in life with viral induced asthma which goes away relatively quickly with some allergy relief meds and a regular inhaler. This last time I was given advair and unfortunately it made me miserable. The sore throat along with my already worn out immune system allowed me to get strep. I ended up sick for 4 more weeks with a secondary infection. I will not use this product again.

Actonel - kris - 07-01-2009

Haven't taken it, but I distinctly remember the ad saying you had to be able to 'sit or stand for at least 30 minutes.' Apparently stomach pain and similar symptoms are a common side effect; in some cases they may be severe enough to prevent taking the drug. See your doctor for more information.

Boniva and Fosamax are the same class of drugs, with similar side effects; nonetheless, some people have reported less adverse effects with one or another drugs of this class. Again, consult with your doctor.

Hydrocodone CP - Lilly - 07-01-2009

After getting all four of my wisdom teeth removed surgically I was given Hydrocodone as a pain reliever. The first couple days the pain medication was a bit too strong (also due to the fact that I wasn't eating solids) causing stomach irritation and vomiting. When I was able to balance the pain medication with eating meals and drinking water/milk it was SO much better. Since this medication is a very strong pain reliever you MUST follow the directions correctly. Once I did so I did not suffer from any side effects and it helped ease my pain.

Singulair - Steve - 07-01-2009

The singulair worked good for my seasonal allergies. I had a visit to a physician because I was having ear troubles which turned out to be an infection. After a few days of the singulair the ear troubles went away. The big drawback to the medication was it made me really sleepy and I was unable to get used to this side effect.

Augmentin - Kaydee - 07-01-2009

I had gotten bit by a cat and the next day by hand was infected. The doctors gave me Augmentin. The first dose was okay, but by the second dose I had severe diarrhea and vomiting. It did not matter if I took it with or with out food. I stopped it after a week, felt the cure was worse than the injury.

Tylenol with Codeine - Nelly - 07-01-2009

After I had surgery, I was prescribed Tylenol with Codeine. I was having severe back pains, to the point where I couldn't even bend over. This medication helped me get through the day and night. It was especially hard to lay down and be comfortable. But after taking Tylenol with Codeine, I was able to go about with my daily activities. After a couple of weeks, I really didn't need it anymore. I had recovered and was starting to exercise again.

The only side-effects that I noticed was being sleepy. But that was only the first few days for me. After that my body got used to the medication and I was fine.
