Percocet - Kristina - 06-06-2009

When I had a lump removed from my breast, the doctor prescribed Percocet for the pain. It was only an hour long operation, but the pain was horrible when I woke up after the operation. First they gave me morphine which completely took the pain away.
When I arrived at home and the pain returned, I took 1 Percocet. After a few minutes I started feeling dizzy. I couldn't even walk to the bathroom. The medication was so strong that it made me feel really strange. I don't take any prescription drugs on a normal basis, so it may have affected me more than usual, but I didn't take any more after that.

Effexor - frank650 - 06-06-2009

I was on Effexor for about 1 year primarily for anxiety/stress. The side efects far outweighed any benefit I received. First of all, when getting on the medication, I went through 2 weeks of agonizing stomach issues - which unfortunately was timed with a family vacation. Once on it, I was always sweating, and I mean always.

My cholesterol and blood pressure also spiked while on it. I don't know if there is a conection, but now that I am off of it, they remain my primary health issues. When weaning myself off the drug, I experienced the same awful electrical impulses through my body tha everyone reports, although not as severe as most. It took about 2 weeks for them to stop completely.

Now that I am off it, I can't believe my doctor ever prescribed it. It's like using an elephant gun on a termite. I do not recommend the drug to anyone, unless you have serious mental health issues that need to be addressed.

Vicodin - DJ - 06-06-2009

I had a compound fractures in my right arm . I was prescribed vicodin for the pain for about a month. It did work very well for that purpose . It did no make me drowsy, instead i was very energized.
The down side is when I stopped taking it I felt like absolute crap. I've taken this medication in the past for shorter periods of time for minor injuries but never for this long. I think that my body had become addicted to it and the withdrawls were almost as bad as the pain .
So my review is... it's great for short term use, but horrible if taken for any length of time.

Paxil - AnitaJay - 06-06-2009

Paxil was one of several antidepressant drugs prescribed for me over a period of ten years. I had been on Wellbutrin before the Paxil, and since coming off Paxil I have been taking Zoloft (sertraline).

Paxil "took the edges off" my life - I didn't experience the "lows" I had tolerated before, where I felt like I was *never* in a good mood. At the same time, however, Paxil took away the occasional "highs" I had experienced in the past. Even my friends noticed the difference. Gone was the righteous indignation I used to spout off about conditions at work - so many thought I just didn't care anymore. My take, though, was that I wasn't bothered by what I now considered the "small stuff." I attribute the change in my attitude to the Paxil.

My only complaint about Paxil - and the reason for my switching to Zoloft - was the sexual side effect of a NOTICEABLE decrease in my libido. I didn't mind feeling like "whatever" where it came to my work...but I DID mind feeling like "whatever" when it came to whether I wanted to have sex or not. I mentioned this change to my doc and she told me Paxil could affect people in this way, and offered to try me on Zoloft. I changed, and I'm not affected in that way by the Zoloft and I've continued with it.

I appreciated Paxil's effects and how it worked, but this particular side effect was something I didn't want to live with.

Yasmin - Lila - 06-06-2009

Yasmin was the first birth control pill I used. I was recommended and prescribed this by my dermatologist because I wanted to control my acne. She said she had patients who had received positive results with it, so she recommended it to me. I learned later that many doctors are encouraged to sell Yasmin because of their profit margins, not because it is medically better for a patient. For me, Yasmin did help with the acne. It helped clear my skin, and regulate my periods. But it made things difficult with weight. I gained a lot of weight on it (about 20 pounds), and I'm still trying to lose it. Also, it was rather expensive for me to use Yasmin. It cost more than other brands on my insurance, and I eventually switched off of this because of the weight gain and cost. Yasmin might be good for some other people, but it wasn't the right birth control for me.

Flonase - Jonathan - 06-06-2009

This medication is absolutely fantastic. I have both seasonal and animal allergies that can leave me sneezing and dripping. Let's face it, pseudophedrine isn't a long-term solution and can affect heart rate, phenylephrine is ineffective by the oral route, and OTC nasal sprays are either ineffective or can have a rebound effect worse than the original symptoms.

Aside from a sickly sweet taste in the back of my mouth immediately after application, I have never had any side effects from Flonase. After about 24 hours of wind-up, the medication stops my snuffly nose. It takes away congestion, too. Everything dries up. I feel normal. I'm ready to face my parents' cats or to take a jog outside.

Ambien - Kristin - 06-06-2009

I have always had trouble sleeping. My main problem is actually falling asleep. My doctor prescribed Ambien CR, which I only tried twice. It did help me fall asleep, which was nice. The problem is that I was practically unable to function the day after. I stopped taking it after I had to pay $75 for a locksmith when I locked myself out of my house the morning after I took it.

If you have nothing important to do the next day, it's a good way to get to sleep. But if you need to be alert and functioning the next day, stay away!

Effexor - heatherh - 06-06-2009

I began taking Effexor after the birth of my fourth child. My doctor and I decided that I was not suffering from postpartum depression. I was simply suffering from too much to do and too much stress. I now had 4 children, my husband had just taken a pay cut and I was fired before my baby was even 1 week old.

My doctor suggested I try the Effexor. He seemed to think it would relax me enough that I could begin to get my life back on track. I began by taking 1/2 a pill for seven days. Then I increased to the full dosage daily.

In the beginning I felt so relaxed I could hardly stay awake. This passed within a few days. Now I am not sleepy during the day but I do sleep wonderfully at night. I also noticed some taste changes. Foods that I have always liked suddenly were not appealing. This also went away after a few weeks. I have noticed that I am not nearly as inclined to eat. I don't know if this is because I was eating due to stress or if I am just not as hungry. I have lost almost ten pounds. A nice side effect that I was not expecting.

I have now weaned myself to only taking 1/2 a dose every day. I have skipped days and noticed a change in myself immediately. Never has anyone said "Wow, you must be on something, you are so much happier." The strange thing is if I forget a dose my kids are quick to say "Why are you being so ugly today?"

Ambien - Julie - 06-06-2009

I have always had trouble falling asleep at night. When I was hospitalized for an injury, I was given Ambien one night and it was like a miracle drug! I fell asleep almost instantly and was asleep for a solid eight hours.

My doctor prescribed Ambien for me after I had returned home since I'd had such good results. Unfortunately, I habituated to the Ambien quite quickly and it lost its effect after about a month.

I recommend it highly for people who have trouble sleeping in the short term but for long term usage, it was not effective for me.

Nasonex - Jo Cho - 06-06-2009

Nasonex worked really well for me. I have rather strong allergies to both pollen and pet dander. When I first began using this medication, the nasal spray itself made me sneeze. Gradually, over a period of about a week, my system adjusted to the medication and my allergies went away.
Nasonex treated my nasal allergies very effectively. This medication is so strong that it also seemed to lessen the itchy, watery, eyes that usually accompanied my nasal symptoms. My breathing even improved since my nasal passages became clear. I highly recommend Nasonex to anyone that suffers from persistent nasal allergies.

Tylenol with Codeine - Jlynn - 06-06-2009

I suffer from back pain on a daily basis. Tylenol with codeine has made my life enjoyable again. I use to struggle and break down due to the pain every morning I woke up. Now I take some Tylenol with codeine right after I wake up and the day is that much brighter.

I suggest for anyone out there with pain issues to use Tylenol with codeine. It has given me my mobility back and made my life much better/

Effexor - Jeff - 06-06-2009

I was first diagnosed with depression in 1994. In addition to counseling, I tried several different anti-depressant medications at that time. They seemed ineffective and caused side effects that made functioning in a normal manner very difficult. Then I tried Effexor which didn't give me the bad side effects, so I stayed on it for about a year. My depression became worse, although probably not due to taking Effexor. About a year later things in my life improved, I seemed free of depression, and my psychiatrist slowly weaned me off of the Effexor. I continued to be free of depression.

Five years later I lost a close family member and my depression came back. I went to see a different psychiatrist, as I had relocated to a different city. I told the psychiatrist about my previous bout with depression. The psychiatrist asked about my prior counseling and medication treatments, and their effectiveness. I gave him a brief synopsis and we decided that I would try taking Effexor Extended Release, along with counseling.

I took Effexor Extended Release and had weekly counseling sessions for approximately 9 months, and my depression seemed to continually improve. I seemed to hit a plateau where I consistently no longer felt depressed. So I suggested that we end the counseling and medication treatments. The psychiatrist agreed, weaned me off of the Effexor Extended Release, and ended the counseling sessions.

I don't know just how much of a positive effect the Effexor and Effexor Extended Release, or the counseling sessions, had in helping me pull out of depression, because both times there were significant positive things that happened in my life that also were at least partially responsible for my improved emotional state. But I cannot rule out the effectiveness of the medication and counseling either.

One good thing about Effexor was that I didn't experience any side effects that kept me from working or functioning in a normal manner, which was not the case with the other medications I had tried.

Seroquel - Nathan - 06-05-2009

When I was being hospitalized for bi-polar disorder I was put on Seroquel. I was highly manic and unable to sleep, I was also quite psychotic. Firstly, this medication allowed me to sleep for the first time in weeks. It was very powerful and I stayed sleepy throughout most of the day. I have to admit, Seroquel helped me regain my sanity and after two weeks I was released from the hospital. After continuing to take the Seroquel however, began to feel strange upon awakening. It felt like I wasn't fully able to wake up and I was half asleep throughout the day. Also, I had terrible restless leg syndrome symptoms during the night. I would say this drug is a great way to prevent psychotic symptoms, and during an episode it can be life saving. Yet I won't take this drug as a preventative measure because of the sleepiness.

Adderall - Peter - 06-05-2009

I was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age and have struggled with it most of my academic life. The past two years however I began taking adderall to help me concentrate in class and study at home. It really has made a significant and positive impact on my ability to focus and concentration which has improved my grades substantially.

The side effects are minimal but I've experienced reduced appetite as well as weight loss.

Glucophage - DK - 06-05-2009

This was the first medication I was prescribed when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and I have to say it was great at first. I say great at first because it kept my blood sugars in check and I was visibly losing weight. What was unfortunate is that the dosage needed to be continually increased to the point where I am now taking it twice a day along with two other oral medications and insulin. I would recommend this for the treatment of Type II Diabetes along with strict adherence to your Doctor's recommendations for diet and exercise. So far I have not had any problems taking this medication, it plainly is working as it should towards keeping my blood sugars at a normal level.

Prozac - Elaine - 06-05-2009

I started taking Prozac 20 mg at the beginning of my senior year. I got every end of the side effects that my doctor had told me about. I was tired all of the time, I had lost about ten pounds because I was never hungry, and I was dizzy most of the time. I also had flu-like symptoms and tiredness when i first started taking it. After about 2 months, those symptoms went away and I started to feel more normal. My mood and depression hadn't really changed, but my doctor told me it might take awhile, so i waited it out. Then I got my prescription raised to Prozac 40 mg. Many things started happening that i noticed when i started the stronger mg's. I started to feel anxious all of the time. I also felt paranoid and scared. One night I was out with my friends and I had a panic attack. That was the first time that i had ever had an attack like that. It was one of the scariest things to ever happen to me and as soon as it did my doctor stopped my Prozac prescription and switched me to Lexapro. Right now I am not taking any anti-depressants and I think my life is better without them.

Wellbutrin - Rachel32 - 06-05-2009

I started taking this a few years ago and it has helped my mood so much. I stopped for awhile due to losing my insurance, and my family said they noticed a big difference (Bad attitude, more depression, etc.) and helped me find a new insurance I could afford just so I could go back on the drug. As long as I take it in the morning, I have no side effects whatsoever.

Another big benefitfor me is that it really does help with weight loss. I was a little overweight when I began taking the drug, and it helps curb the appetite which is a big bonus. When I stopped taking the drug I gained most of the weight back, but now that I'm on it again, I have begun losing. I'm at 130 now, down from 150!

Flonase - Martin - 06-05-2009

I have had chronic allergic rhinitis as long as I can remember. I spent my childhood and adolescence moving from liquid decongestants to antihistamine tablets. None of them did much more than make me sleepy. A few years ago, my doctor had me try Flonase, and I am not exaggerating when I say it's been life-changing.

At the height of allergy season, I take a puff of Flonase in each nostril twice a day, and I have no runny nose. In winter, there are fewer allergens and I can back off to one puff a day.

I have had no significant side effects at all. No dizziness, no pain, no nosebleeds. In winter, when the weather is very dry (forced hot air heating doesn't help), Flonase can make my dry nose a bit more dry. If this becomes a problem, I just use an over-the-counter saline spray.

I'll stop using Flonase when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Zyrtec - sbeauty - 06-05-2009

Zyrtec is the only anti-histamine that can keep my allergies reasonably under control. I've tried other brands, but I had lots of allergy symptoms even when taking them. Recently my doctor switched me to Allegra because Zyrtec went over-the-counter. That didn't help me at all. I had constant runny nose and itchy eyes, a cough, and felt like I had a cold most of the time. Since then I've gone back to Zyrtec because I decided that paying a little more for Zyrtec was worth it. My symptoms have pretty much gone away since that time.

I took several different anti-depressants prior to the doctor putting me on Zoloft. None of them worked very well at keeping my depression under control, and most had unpleasant side effects, such as profuse sweating or dry mouth. From the day I was put on Zoloft, my life changed. I've had no problems with depression in the 10 years since that time, and there's been no reason for me to have to switch to still another medication.
